A surgical technologist is a person who assists surgeons. The specific job duties of surgical technologists include sterilizing surgical instruments, prepping patients for surgery, and organizing or setting up equipment. They often work under the close supervision of other medical professionals such as surgeons, RNs (Registered Nursings), and/or anesthesiologists. They might also be there to supervise the patient during the entire procedure. Training to become a surgical technologist takes up to nine months. However, it can take as much as two years. This training can be obtained through a technical school, community college or university. To be able to take courses leading to a certificate in surgical technology, a student must have a high school diploma. A student in high school who wants to pursue this career can also prepare by taking classes during junior and senior year, such as biology and chemistry. Additional classes are offered in physiology and microbiology as well as pharmacology, ethics, medical terminology, and pharmacology. Students learn how to care for patients during surgery and how to prevent the spread of infections and viruses. The courses in surgical technology include both classroom and clinical education. Students will have the opportunity to practice the skills they learn in the classroom and apply them in real-life situations. A degree, diploma, or certificate is awarded to someone who successfully completes the surgical technologist program. To become a licensed surgeon technologist, individuals must pass certain national exams. A person who has been trained in this field can work in a surgical unit, but they don't have to be a surgeon. Most surgical technologists work in hospitals, but a few find employment in private doctor offices or smaller facilities that provide outpatient care. Many work in one type of surgery such as brain surgery or heart surgery. Upon completion of additional training and education, a few surgical technologists may become surgeons' first assistants. For the next few years, there is a great job outlook for a surgical technologist. Demand is expected to rise even faster than other professions. They can also earn a good annual salary. As stated by the ACH (Occupational-Employment-Handbook), for the year 2008, the average annual salary for this job was at around $38k, and many in the surgical technology field earn more than $50,000 annually. For example, technologists who specialize in brain surgery earn more annually than those who work in a dental office. If you are looking for a career in medicine, this is a good career choice. It is less difficult to train and educate to become a surgical technologist than for other medical fields. However, the job prospects are expected to grow.

Every day we experience pain in some way or another. We all feel pain, regardless of whether it is a headache, a hangnail, a hangnail, or a paper cut. It is the oldest known affliction, so it makes sense that pain is the oldest medical problem. There is a long history of pain misinterpretation and confusion. Once, pain was considered necessary for healing. Since the 17th century, Rene Descartes (17th century philosopher, mathematician, and physiologist) has made any inquiry into the causes and mechanisms of pain. Descartes was the first to suggest that there might be a connection between pain sensations and brain activity. While we all know that the brain processes pain sensations today, it was revolutionary 400 years ago! Descartes' mind-body connection would make a huge difference in pain relief. Revolutionary was the idea of nerves transmitting information to the brain for processing. Descartes' hypothesis was supported by anatomical studies done in the 19th century. It has remained valid up to very recently. The idea of a hard-wired system came under fire in the 1960's. Neuroscientists now believe that sensory information is a result of the integration of information from many sources. Neuroscientists believe that emotional and behavioral information from the brain can alter the strength of the pain signal. It's a two-way street, not a one-way. This may explain the different pain thresholds between patients. Biologists believe that the sensory information is being integrated in the spinal cord and not in the brain. These findings have led to innovative pain management strategies. Palliative care is a general medical specialty that includes pain management. Palliative care in the United States is the treatment of symptoms that are caused by disease. It does not depend on the prognosis of the patient and can be performed in conjunction with curative medical treatments. Hospice care refers to the provision of palliative care for those near the end of their lives. They share some similarities in their goals and principles, which we have listed below.
Manipulation under Anesthesia (MUA), a non-surgical, outpatient treatment for musculoskeletal issues is growing in popularity.
Manipulation under anesthesia is generally considered to be low-risk and produce very good results. It is not operative. MUA procedures are performed only by licensed doctors who have received specific training and certification. The procedures are done in an outpatient facility under light IV sedation. This is not general anesthesia. The patient is usually given an amnestic drug to make it difficult for them to remember what happened. To remove fibrous adhesions and scar tissue, a team approach is used with two doctors. The treatments are usually performed over several days to ensure the best long-term outcome. Since over 60 years, the manipulation under anesthesia has been used to treat a variety of conditions. These include breaking up scar tissue, fibrous adhesions and muscle spams. They also help overcome hypersensitivity in injured areas, such as reflex sympathetic dystrophy pain. The following conditions may make you a candidate for the MUA procedure.
Patients find MUA a very rewarding procedure. The doctor will manipulate the problem joints and soft tissues beyond what the patient would normally be able to move under anesthesia. The patient would not be able to benefit from the procedure if it was done awake. The procedure can be done over several days to increase the benefits of pain relief and sustained range motion. Patients benefit from the procedure because they can move more freely without feeling the manipulation. With a quick recovery, the pain levels after the procedure are minimal and there is little discomfort. To maintain their range of motion, patients will need to attend therapy sessions for several weeks following the procedure. |
